HAIRSPRAY

Book by Mark O'Donnell & Thomas Meehan
Music by Marc Shaiman
Lyrics by Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman
Based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters

The tradition here is broken by the show itself. This exhilarating song and dance musical comedy is to the 1960's what Grease was to 1950's! It's all that on the surface with every kid in town tuning in each week to catch the television hit of the decade (and one girl in particular fighting to get her shot on it!) but underlying, is her fight against bigotry and racial prejudice that gives this multiple Tony Award winning Broadway phenomenon it's incredible impact, strength and heart!

*A quick note about age - The listed ages are the suggested APPEARANCE of the characters. Don't count yourself out if you've missed the cut-off. In other words, you don't have to be in high school, you just have to look the part...even if you're really 35!

*A quick note about race - The racial segregation of the 1960's is a central theme of this production and we wish to represent truthfully and respectfully the struggles of that era. We are not looking for "Blacks Only" or "Whites Only" but we are also NOT color-blind casting this show. There will be no lightening or darkening of an actors skin to fit a role, but those of mixed or other ethnicities than called for may still be considered for casting if you naturally look the part.

No preparation is required. You will be reading from the script. Most everyone will sing from a selection of musical pieces from the show. All audition material will be provided as well as time to learn the songs. A quick dance routine will be taught, please wear comfortable attire.
Please attempt to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to audition time in order to complete your audition form.
